Following the recent disruption caused by Storm Goretti and with further severe weather forecast over the coming weeks, employers may wish to put in place a policy to deal with the issues which can impact businesses as a result of adverse weather conditions.
An adverse weather and travel disruption policy sets out the steps to be followed where employees are unable to attend work due to circumstances outside their control, such as heavy snow or ice for example. These policies typically apply only where it is unsafe or impossible for an employee to travel, rather than where journeys are simply more difficult or inconvenient. Employees will usually be expected to make reasonable efforts to attend work, including allowing additional travel time where possible.
Where attendance at the workplace is genuinely not possible, employers may wish to consider alternative working arrangements, such as home working or working from an alternative location. While this can help minimise business disruption, it will not be appropriate for every role or sector.
